Welcome from the President/Chief Executive Officer

"Be Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind."

Dear Foundation Supporters:
Welcome to The Thornton Sisters Foundation Website! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to personally thank all of you who have financially supported The Thornton Sisters Foundation and unconditionally given your time and resources to help me and my sisters over these many years...two decades!

As the fifth (5th) daughter of Donald & Itasker Thornton and the youngest of the Thornton Sisters, I established the Foundation in 1991 as a way to not only honor my parents, but to carry on their beliefs in quality education. So, the Foundation is designed to provide educational awareness and financial assistance to New Jersey public High School students of color who have been accepted and will be attending a 4-year college/university. As a 501(c)(3) faith-based organization, the Thornton Sisters Foundation has a tax-exempt status; and therefore, donations from Benefactors are tax deductible.

The scholarships are used to contribute to the students’ first year college tuition because, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and many Benefactors have a commitment to support the Foundation’s motto: “The NOTES of Education Compose the Symphony of LIFE.

I am proud to state that over these 25+ years in operation, The Thornton Sisters Foundation has issued more than 500 one-year College Scholarship Awards.

Once again, Thank You for your support.

With Much Love,
Dr. Rita Thornton, J.D., Ed.S., Ph.D.
aka One of the real-life sisters portrayed in the TV movie,
"The Ditchdigger's Daughters".
